Welcome to third grade. Here is some
general information about our classroom. |

School begins at 8:30 and ends
at 3:00. Your child may arrive at 8:15 and be escorted
directly to the playground. Pick up is no later than 3:15.
There is a before and after care program available, please
contact the office for more information. |

Homework |
Your 3rd grade child
is expected to complete approximately 45 minutes of homework each
night. Homework Club is offered Monday-Thursday from 3:15-4:15 as
part of the After School Program. Please contact Ms. Sariah for more
information. Homework Club is a good opportunity for your child to
get extra help in needed areas. At home you might want to try
setting a specific time and place for homework to be completed each
night for the 45 minute time period. This daily homework time means
your child should use the entire scheduled time for homework. This
consistency should help improve your child’s homework habits. When
your child learns that rushing through homework will not be rewarded
with free time, he or she will quickly learn to slow down and do a
better job. Included in the 45 minute homework period should be 15
minutes or more of reading. Messy homework will be returned to the
student to complete again. Homework with more than 2 errors will
also be returned for the student to correct and turn in the
following day. A Homework Chart is on display in our classroom to
monitor student progress. |

Library
Visits |
One Friday of each month we will be
going to the Flagstaff Public Library to learn the skills necessary
for obtaining information and finding books. You and your child will
be responsible for returning the items they check out. No CD’s may
be checked out and there is a limit of five items. |
Weekly
Letters |
Keep a look out in your child’s
binder for weekly letters about upcoming events, what we are
studying, field trips, parent involvement needs etc. |

Wheels on
Wednesday |
As a third grader, your child may
participate in Wheels on Wednesday! Your child may bring a bike,
skateboard, roller blades, or any other safe mechanism of travel
that has wheels. HELMETS ARE REQUIRED!! Wednesday is also
Pizza Day. Pizza costs $2.00 a slice and proceeds benefit Mt.
School. |
Sharing |
Here is opportunity for your child to
gain exposure speaking in front of a group. Share is on Fridays for
children who have passed in all of their homework assignments the
week prior (with 1 exception). Students may bring in an item to
share that represents something interesting about them or just share
a story. |
Discipline |
Classroom discipline follows the Mt.
School Behavior Code found in your
Parent Handbook. Students who choose not to follow classroom
rules will receive: (1) a verbal reminder or warning, (2) yellow
card warning, (3) red card with an appropriate consequence, (4) pink
card/pink slip. Students will begin each day with a purple card. If
students behave all week and have 4-5 purple cards they will receive
a behavior award on Friday. Please encourage your children to behave
well in class and strive towards receiving their weekly award.

Birthday
Celebrations |
Traditionally, Mt. School's policy on
birthdays was that the birthday boy or girl would bring in a book to
read and donate to the class. This year I would like to continue
with this custom. Although, if your child insists, bringing a treat
will be fine. Please let me know ahead of time if we will be
celebrating your child's birthday. This year we have one student who
is allergic to nuts. Please take this into consideration when you
plan a treat. |
Spelling |
There will be a spelling test almost
every Friday. In your child’s spelling folder you should find two
lists. One list is to stay at home, the other is to stay in their
binder so they can study at school. Most children will have a Word
Ring with the words they have misspelled written on index cards. I
will test these review words (3 at a time) on the weekly tests.
Spelling homework will be sent home on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and
Thursdays. |
