Philosophy and Biography

I believe that all children are capable of learning and I construct the curriculum so they progress through appropriate stages of development, learn through active and meaningful experiences, learn through a process and learn through play. I encourage a safe atmosphere in which each child can learn and grow while promoting self-discipline. Cooperative groups are incorporated into the curriculum to provide a broad range of learning experiences. Small groups provide for structured and non-structured activities that create a balance of cooperation, competitive and individual learning. "Smart Centers" allow students to work with a partner and or individually and practice skills.

I graduated from ASU with a BA in education. I also have my Masters in Education/Curriculum from NAU. I’ve taught in the public schools for 16 years in the 3rd and 4th grades. I taught a combo class of 1st and 2nd graders last year at Mt. School. This year I will be teaching 2nd grade. I feel fortunate to be in such a wonderful environment here at Mountain School.

Discipline

Students learn that they have a great deal of freedom to do many activities when they are in control of their own behavior. The basic rules in the classroom are; Do what is expected and do it the best you can, and no one has the right to interfere with learning, safety, and the well being of others. If someone chooses to break the rules they are letting me know they need help with their behavior. I use a 4 colored card system, time out to think, and positive communication with both the students and parents. Of course the positives really work the best and I am continually praising, nurturing, modeling, and celebrating good choices in behavior. If students receive 4 green cards within the week I send notes, call home or give out a free homework pass.

Students can also earn lunch in the classroom if homework is brought in for 1 month. I reward cooperative group activities with behavior and academic points. Those points earn pizza, gum, popcorn, etc. after the group has worked together for a number of months.

Homework

Homework is encouraged as it opens communication between school and home. An assignment is given daily and is expected to take the student at least 20-30 minutes to complete. These assignments reflect lessons in all areas of the curriculum. Along with the nightly assignments I expect the students to study spelling words, practice math flash cards, read, and have a hobby. Individuals who complete assignments over a period of time will eat lunch in the classroom; also group points are given if everyone has their assignment.
