5th Grade at Mountain School

We have two 5th grade classrooms, with 16-18 students in each homeroom. Ms. Ashley Fell specializes in English Language Arts (ELA), and with her guidance, all 5th grade students receive reading, writing, and grammar instruction, utilizing a wide range of literature and non-fiction texts.  At Mountain School, our 5th grade students write and present their own graduation speeches.

Our other homeroom class is led by Ms. Faith Bast, who specializes in math. In her classroom, all 5th graders receive math instruction that utilizes the highly-rated and rigorous Bridges in Mathematics curriculum.

A Cohesive Learning Experience

Each teacher provides project-based learning to their homeroom cohorts in the subjects of Social Studies and Science.  The two teachers collaborate on grade-level special events, guest speakers and field trips, ensuring that all 5th graders have opportunities to participate in hands-on learning as a cohesive group.  Over the years, the students have participated in place-based field trips to the Flagstaff Extreme Ropes Course, the Pioneer Living History Museum, the Arizona Science Center, the Grand Canyon and the Grand Canyon Railway. Additionally, a partnership with T-Gen North resulted in multiple visits to the facility in Flagstaff.

Our Community

We are proud of our 5th grade team, the community culture that is developed with our 5th grade students, the ownership and responsibility that our students have, and the wide range of experiences that enhance their understanding of the world around them and their own ability to make a positive impact.

Our 5th grade students consistently perform well on all Arizona achievement tests (AASA, AzSci), with a proficiency rate that is
35-40% higher than the state average.

“Mountain School always allows you to learn from your mistakes and helps you move forward on to new things. They never let you give up.”

– QW, Class of 2024

“What I like most about Mountain School isn’t the A rated school it is or the good grades everybody gets. It’s the things like the strong community that has been built up and the amazing teachers that have been working here for years and the things I’ve learned and accomplished.  I’m a different person than I was a year ago.”
